You can go back up and get the FFMpeg software. That's the one that allows you to recognize and play compressed music files other than MP3. Stock Audacity has no idea what a w4a file is and neither do I. Do you mean m4a? That's an iTunes AAC sound file.

It's possible you got a plain Music CD and not a data CD with fancy files on it. Use CDex and try to "rip" the disk into music files. If that doesn't work, then try installing FFMpeg from the download site and then try to open the files.

Thanks a lot for your prompt reply. I've followed your instructions and downloaded the upgrade, Lame and FFmpeg without any problems. I've yet to try them out but I'm not expecting any hassles. Will carry on with 1.3 from now. Tried to trash the audacity preferences folder ...
