... They may be WMA files or some other compressed format. Audacity 1.3.14 can support many file types (but not APE afaik) if you also install "FFMpeg". See here: http://manual.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=FAQ:Installation_and_Plug-Ins#installffmpeg

... it is by right clicking on the file and selecting "Properties". If you upgrade to Audacity 1.3.14 and install the optional package "FFMpeg" then Audacity will support many more file types.
