... if when you export multiple from Audacity, you choose as export format the "AIFF (Apple) signed 16-bit PCM" choice, or the "Custom FFmpeg Export" choice. Which export format of those two do you choose? Gale

I'm guessing ffmpeg creates very good AAC files rivaling that of iTunes, since I haven't found anything on the web bashing it.
