I have downloaded the ffmpeg software and it didnt make any difference I have just successfully imported an AIFF containing IMA4 into Audacity using FFmpeg, but be aware that by default Audacity will use its built-in importer for AIFF, ...

... then get a video with just the vocals on it? Not from Audacity. Audacity works only with audio. If you import a video file (requires that you have FFmpeg installed), then only the audio part of the file is read.

Thank you everyone for your replies. The option of converting into AAC using iTunes does the job. I also tried the custom FFmpeg export but could not get the resulting file to play - probably my lack of knowledge of what to put within the options available. I exported 256 kbps stereo ...

... for AAC export so stereo files will always be exported at about 192 kbps. You can however specify AAC export bit rate if you choose "Custom FFmpeg Export" instead of "M4A (AAC) Files (FFmpeg)". Click the Options... button, choose "mp4" in the formats list and "libvo_aacenc" ...

If you have a sound file that Audacity doesn't recognize, it might play off speed. On Windows and Macs, you can install the FFMpeg software to make Audacity know about many more formats. I'm not sure how it works in Linux.

You can get QuickTime to tell you what you have. Window > Show Movie Inspector.
You have an odd sound file and you may need to install the FFMpeg software to play it.
