... What extension does the file have after the name and the final dot/period? If it's MP4 or M4A, then for Audacity 2.1.0 you need to install FFmpeg from http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_installation_and_plug_ins.html#macff in order to import the file. Gale

Have you tried forcing FFmpeg to import the file? File > Import > Audio... or File > Open... , choose "FFmpeg-compatible files" in the "Files of type:" dropdown, then select the "MP3" file.
