for 2.2.1 - i have downloaded lame and ffmpeg but what do i need to do for audacity to connect to these downloads? do i have to download into audacity file in downloads?
also - what is ffmpeg for?

You're dragging from iTunes onto the desktop and then into Audacity, right? If you're trying to go direct, you may need to install the FFMpeg format translation software. https://www.audacityteam.org/download/mac/ Scroll down. Depending on how you did it, your iTunes music is in Apple AAC ...
