FYI I have confirmed that the problem with losing the Album Artist and Album Year metadata when creating M4A (AAC) files was not fixed in version 2.2.3. This may be a bug in the FFmpeg library rather than Audacity itself.

... metadata, it seems to me this is truly a bug, and a bug that was not corrected in the recent 2.2.3 update). It seems to me the bug may be in the FFMpeg add-on rather than Audacity itself.

I can confirm, you don't. 24-bit WAV is natively supported by Audacity in the way described in your post.
