Lame is for exporting MP3.

FFMpeg is a different program.

File > Export > Export Audio > Custom FFMpeg exports. Is your format in those lists?

If you install FFMpeg into your Audacity, it will open the sound part of many different types of files. m4a is a "container format", which usually contains audio and video. Audacity does not do video, but if you install FFmpeg for Audacity, then you will probably be able to import the audio part of the m4a file.
