This is probably and FFmpeg (or iTunes) issue so there may be nothing the Audacity developers can do...

Audacity will recognize many audio format on its own (WAV, AIFF, MP3, etc). It will deal with a lot more if you install the FFMpeg software. Note it's different software if you have Audacity 2.3.0 and before than if you have Audacity 2.3.1 and later. Scroll down to FFMpeg. https://www.audacityteam.org/download/mac/

First, Audacity 2.1.0 is very old. The latest version is 2.3.1. We recommend upgrading. Second, you have downloaded the LAME file, not the FFmpeg file.
