I see another Compressor (by Dominic Mazzoni) in Audacity effects menu.
Do you know what is the difference between Chris's and Dominic's compressors?

If the recordings are really low, you may need to bring up the volume in either Audacity, or the Windows/Mac control panels.

This listening to Classical Music thing was exactly why Chris designed his compression tool.

You might have some joy with "Chris' Dynamic Compressor". It's a Nyquist plug-in that you pop into your plug-ins folder. It's not really designed for what you are wanting to do, but with a bit of tweaking it will probably help a lot. You should be able to easily find it with Google.
