When using a USB microphone, you must switch off "software playthrough" in "Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O". (This is off by default). This will mean that you cannot hear the microphone through your headphone, but that should not be a problem as you will be able to hear the live ...

In Audacity, go into "Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O" and make sure that "software playthrough" is switched off (not selected).

Make sure either Software Playthrough or Hardware Playthrough is selected. Pick the one with the least delay problems while you're performing. The Windows version does not have an option for Hardware Playthrough - hardware playthrough is the default setting and is set automatically ...
