... use one at a time. Audacity 1.3 projects will not open up in 1.2. Audacity 1.3 has a "Latency" adjustment to try and take care of the delay issues. You are listening to one computer's worth of delay. The only other way out is to get a faster machine. Koz

... You will no doubt figure out that even when you Perform in perfect time, the timeline doesn't work out like that. That's called latency delay and you can fix it in post production (slide the tracks around) or you can get rid of Audacity 1.2 and install 1.3 which has controls for this. ...

If your sound card supports hardware playthrough you can avoid the problem by switching off "software playthrough" in Preferences (it is off by default).

Some audio devices do not support hardware playthrough, in which case the delay is unavoidable.

... in Audacity. I think you will find it in "Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O". Note that using software playthrough there is a small delay (perhaps half a second) between the sound going into the computer and coming back out through the speakers.
