... me to hear what I'm playing. The problem is that there's a ridiculous latency when I'm using software playthrough. Not like a short, slap-back delay, but like the better part of a second. That isn't going to work. Help?!

... change sound sources and adjust volumes without going to preferences. Line-in replicates the old OS9 playthrough functionality. It still has some delay, but not as bad a Audacity's software playthrough. Probably still not good enough for overdubbing, but great if you want to listen to your USB ...

... not, but if it does not seem to take effect then restart Audacity. Note that with "software playthrough" enabled there is a slight delay (1/2 a second 'ish) before the sound comes out through the speakers because Audacity is now recording from your USB device, then playing it back ...

In Windows, there is no option for "hardware playthrough". Hardware playthrough is automatic if supported by the hardware - software playthrough is an available option when using hardware that does not support hardware playthrough (such as when using a USB turntable). 'Tis as I thought. S...

You have encountered the dreaded "software playthrough" delay. Go to Edit > Preferences then the Recording tab. Uncheck "software playthrough" and check "hardware playthrough". Click OK and try again. If you can't hear anything ...
