Re: Talking Machine

From your description I think what you're hearing is the "software playthrough" delay. Do you have "Software Playthrough" checked in the Transport menu? Do you get one echo or many echoes?

To answer your question, by default Audacity works from disc, not RAM.

Re: I am an idiot

... anything, you should restart Audacity to make the changes stick. Hardware Playthrough is the only one that's useful. Software Playthrough has a delay almost always, so your live performance will sound like the echoes on a cellphone. And that's just you. To hear the first track from ten minutes ...

... control room monitor would be switchable between direct from desk and post recorder. Ironically, many professional singers prefer to have a short delay added to their voice before it is sent to their headphones. I'm not a singer, but I'm told that they find it easier to hear themselves if there ...

Re: Audacity 1.3 Beta Delay when recording "God Please Help"

There's got to be something im doing wrong don't you think? Nope. That's the software playthrough delay and there's nothing you can do about it. It's not really meant for singing or playing, more for folks who want to hear their LP while they are copying it. Get yourself ...

... is to get Hardware Playthrough to work in Audacity Preferences. That feeds your own show back to you direct from the sound card with little or no delay. If your sound card doesn't support that, the best you can do is Software Playthrough which gives you your own performance one computer late -- ...

... "playthrough." In Audacity Preferences, you can select hardware or software playthrough. Hardware playthrough typically has little or no delay but not everybody supports it. Most systems support software playthrough, but that has the delay and it's worse depending on your computer. Your ...

Re: Recording from M-Audio Black Box

Found the issue, I had Software Playthrough checked. Seems that had me monitoring both input & output. There must be a delay in the device, so basically I was hearing two drum patters, but with a time shift between them, making it seem twice as fast.

Re: Delay when Overdubbing

There are two kinds of delay when working with Audacity. One is called latency and has to do with the time you hit a note to the time Audacity lays it down on the track. Audacity can correct for this if you tell it how much correction ...

Re: Playthrough during recording: issues

Same thing with a MacBook Pro. There is no Hardware Playthrough and Software Playthrough has a delay -- not tragically so in my case. I've cranked through a hour-long live recording session successfully that way. I just put up with the delay and I did find the mixer doing ...
