But when I did I used Winamp, at a rate of 224 kbps (this is probably overkill). I never used Winamp to convert wavs directly though, I'm not sure how to do that off-hand.

Re: How do I get the best quality MP3s?
I don't make AAC files anymore, since my Creative Zen won't play them

Re: What's this effect?
It's absolutely a form of distortion. Any constant non-linear change to an audio signal will result in distortion. This particular distortion is very fuzzy (aka very white-ish sounding), but I can see a use for it. I think one problem you're running into is that a Float is not accurate enough. I use...

Maximum file size isn't
The maximum file size is waaayy too small. Can't it be 1Meg? And can't we do away with only allowing .zip files? I'd like to upload MP3s directly.

I agree about AAC files, they're certainly nicer. But do remember that Audacity cannot open them as of now. Perhaps in future versions, but I'm not sure how the licensing for the technology works.

Re: What's this effect?
The values below the zero line need to be handled a little differently, because you can't take the square root of a negative number. But I'll try to bust out Matlab and see if I can't write a quick program that will do this. If I knew more about Nyquist I would probably be able to write a Nyquist pr...

Re: Amplify or Normalize Question
You'll want to use the Compressor, not Amplify or Normalize. In order to use it correctly, do this: On your unprocessed track, highlight a portion that is just background noise, no talking (this is the Noise Floor). Then click Effects -> Amplify. Write down the default number here and click Cancel (...

Re: Loss of audio when exporting project
Export it to wav. Does it sound ok there?
Usually 128 kbps MP3s sound pretty good, are you sure it's exported to the that bit rate? You can right click on the file in Windows and go to Properties -> Summary -> Advanced to find out the bit rate. It's odd that it sounds warbly.

Re: Can you make all pitches uniform?
In my 2 minutes of searching, I can't really find a psychoacoustic analysis of exactly how the brain is failing to process this information. It seems that people with this condition can recognize and process voices (even picking out who's speaking), but cannot process "musical" information...

Re: Recording from Crown Mixer
In that case, I'm sure you can run a few cables from the Line Outs on the Crown to your computer's Line In. The quality will be limited to what your sound card can provide.
