Use Windows Explorer's serach function to find a file called 'audacity.cfg'
It's probably in a folder called C:Documents and SettingsYOUR_WINDOWS_USER_NAMEapplication dataaudacity.
Everything that's in that folder should be deleted. Then you can re-install Audacity.

Re: Nothing recording
I'm assuming you're trying to record streaming media. That's our most common question. If my assumption is incorrect, let us know what you're trying to record. If you've read through this page (specifically the grey box at the top), then you should know you only have three options at this point: 1) ...

Re: Can't change volume
Yes, Bob, if you can't get Windows Sound Recorder to work and you're sure your drivers are set up right, then new hardware seems like your best bet.

Re: Sound distortion when recording streaming music on Vista
Yes, that's normal. Wavs are not small files. If you want a small file, export to mp3 (see here), and delete any Audacity project files (PROJECT_NAME.aup and the PROJECT_NAME_data folder).

Re: A questing regarding 16 and 32 bit converting
What do you mean by Mastering? That words has so many definitions it's become damn near useless by itself. But to answer a more general question, converting from 16 -> 32 -> 16 does result in some (very small) errors. Why this happens has never been fully explained to me, but it does happen. I've en...

Burn them? At the stake?
If not, then maybe as an effigy? That's not as much fun though.
And Koz, we all know the best deal for shoes on the Internet is zappos.com

Re: Recording From Cellphone?
What do you mean by "hooking up my cellphone to my computer" If you've got an audio output port, then you might be able to plug that into your sound card, but the cables might be funny since those ports are meant for headsets and have an extra conductor. But if you're trying to plug your U...

Re: Recording with a guitar port
You should be able to play other tracks while recording one. If that isn't working then something is still wrong.
The next thing to try is defragmenting your hard drive. If it's full or fragmented, Audacity can't read and write data as smoothly as it needs to.

Re: Mixing Tutorial - General Methods
RE: question about limiting each track: I avoid doing this as much as possible, but if I have a track that's just too peaky, I set the threshold setting just slightly above the "average" of the track. That way, only the extra loud peaks get altered. The reason I don't recommend going in wi...

Re: Recording with a guitar port
I meant to try recording with Windows Sound Recorder in order to test your hardware using a different piece of software. You wouldn't be able to use that program for any multi-tracking, but it's a useful diagnostic tool when things go bad. If the same problems show up there, then we can eliminate Au...
