The status of your speakers, microphone, and headphones are irrelevant when recording from that input.
You should, however, make sure your computer's output volume is turned up (there's a slider with a picture of a speaker next to it in Audacity, make sure that is all the way to the right).

At the top of this link: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Mixer_Toolbar_Issues#Using_the_Control_Panel There is a grey box detailing issues that people often have trying to record their speaker output. It's entirely up to your sound card drivers to provide you with that input and most co...

Re: Cant record anything, can only record mic?
Your sound card drivers likely got changed around or updated automatically. From now on, you'll probably have to go through Audacity's Edit -> Preferences -> Audio I/O menu to select your input and output devices.

Re: MIXER TOOLBAR ISSUES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Someone needs to take away your CAPS-LOCK function. Your message is over-compressed like the radio. The Audio I/O tab is located in the Edit -> Preferences menu in Audacity. That's where you need to select your input and output devices. As for the mixer, what kind of mixer is it? If it's a USB (or F...

Re: Recording Level Adjustment
At home I have an M-Audio Delta 1010LT , at work I have a SoundMax Digital Audio chip on my motherboard. Although now that I look a little more closely, Audacity 1.2.6 has this issue, but Audacity 1.3.3 does not (both at work). So I guess it's not as closely related to the sound card drivers as I th...

Re: Ability to record stopped working?
cpl, You need to make sure your USB turntable is plugged in properly and working correctly. Often those USB turntables change your system sound settings without telling you (and can sometimes confuse Audacity). So make sure the turntable is plugged in, and then open up Audacity make sure it's listed...

Re: Recording Level Adjustment
I've noticed that mine does the same thing at work, but my computer at home does not. The difference is almost certainly linked to the sound card drivers (my computer at home has a very nice sound card). I think there's nothing you can do about it other than use a different set of sound card drivers...

Re: removing quiet voices in the background
Audacity 1.3.3 and 1.3.4 have an Auto Duck feature, but I haven't gotten a straight answer out of how to use it. Slothen, I'm sending PMs to two of our developers who show up on a semi-regular basis (GaleAndrews and RichardAsh1981). I'll link them to this thread. Hopefully one of them will be able t...

Re: unwanted mouse clicks are being recorded
It occurred to me that you might have a DC offset problem. You can check by recording "silence" (set the mic up to record normally and then record but don't talk into it, let it run for a few seconds). Now, highlight the signal and click Analyze -> Plot Spectrum. Change the Size box to 163...
