Re: Cable confusion
It depends on the microcassette recorder. If it has a regular small headphone jack, then just buy a 3.5mm Male to Male patch cable. Plug that into your computers Line In and set Audacity to record from the Line In input (edit -> preferences -> audio i/o menu). You'll have to use the headphone volume...

Re: Automatic mic leveling? or Software-based commpression?
wondering if there was any way for Audacity to automatically set the input signal to a consistent level. Not currently, no. I also don't think it's likely to be added any time soon since the Compressor effect can do this after you're done recording. If you don't want to spend a lot of time Normaliz...

Re: Exporting to MP3 results in longer / slower file?
Then this may be a new problem to me. If you re-import the broken files you've exported into the original Audacity project, does it still exhibit this strange behavior? If you export a project and immediately import that file into Audacity, it should sound the same as the project files do. If it doe...

Doh! I should have thought of that. USB audio devices like to set themselves as your default audio device without telling you.

Re: Recording guitar (beginner) - lots of background noise
Mic plugged into the audio jack on teh front of the PC. This is the source of your problem. Mic jacks on computers are not compatible with professional microphones. I really wish computer manufacturers would fix the labeling problem. As others have said, you'll need a pre-amp for the mic. Then you'...

Re: de-esser in LADSPA
There is no de-esser in the LADSPA pack provided on the Audacity page. I'm not quite sure why people are telling you there is. However, there is a de-esser in this pack: http://sourceforge.net/projects/tap-plugins I haven't used it, I can't say how well it works, but this page should be useful: http...

Re: No sound in exported file.
If you're still having trouble, I'll go back even further.
Can you play and hear the audio in Audacity? I hope so.
If you can, it should be a simple matter of clicking File -> Export. Is something that basic not working? If so, this might be tough to fix.

Re: Project Rate and Bitrate Resetting
Your file is exporting just fine at 16-bit, 22.05KHz (most likely). When you import a new file into Audacity it automatically gets resampled to whatever your Default Sample Rate and Default Sample Format are in the Edit -> Preferences -> Quality menu. The audio that you import into Audacity us not r...

Re: Recording problem
The other common cause of feedback during that kind of recording is leaving "Software Playthrough" turned on in Audacity's edit -> preferences -> Audio I/O menu.
It should be turned off.
