Whoa, news to me.
I'll have to remember that. It looks like it works fairly well, but you'll have to tell it exactly what you mean by "silence."

Re: Sound Cards
No doubt that Creative's cards are useful. But I stand by my statement that they can't stand up to anything that Sam Ash will sell you. I'll throw sound quality out the window since I don't have a way to compare. You're right that those numbers don't have a whole lot of meaning (especially without t...

Re: No sound being recorded? Help?
First off, you need to use Audacity 1.3.4 in order to make surround sound files . Audacity 1.2.6 does not have this capability. You can get your surround signal to your computer and get it routed through the sound card and out to the speakers. So you're setup to do hardware monitoring correctly. I t...

Re: Correction of clipping?
So you've got hard clipping, not soft clipping. That's what I think everyone was figuring. There's an effect called the Declipper that's included with the LADSPA plugins pack, but it does not do what you want. I don't know of any parabolic interpreters, but I wouldn't be too surprised if one existed...

Re: Missing character z in label tracks
Yes, uppercase 'Z' works out of the box because Audacity wasn't recognizing [shift]+z as a shortcut for anything, so it was passing the keystroke on to whatever subroutine is used to handle text entry. But regular 'z' was being intercepted.

Re: Removing silent parts automatically
There is no way to get Audacity to automatically remove silence or to avoid recording it in the first place. You could ask for this feature in the "Adding Features to Audacity" forum. The more people that ask, the higher the priority.

Re: Problem white exporting to wav
The problem is that you're changing the sample rate while exporting. This is a known (and irritating) bug. I work with 12KHz files pretty often at work and have stopped using Audacity at work except when I need to. The workaround is to export the file to wav (not mp3) at the sample rate you want to ...

Re: Reliability of USB audio devices
There are few inherent problems with USB devices. USB 1.1 wasn't designed with audio in mind, but it works well enough for a few channels at a time as long as there aren't other USB devices hogging all the resources. USB 2.0 also wasn't designed with audio in mind, but it is prone to fewer bandwidth...
