Re: ripping vinyl
The Creative Audigy cards have pretty high quality outputs, but their inputs are of mediocre quality. This is probably the source of the noise. I used to use one and it was pretty bad, then I upgraded to a Turtle Beach card for a few years and it was better. But now I use an M-Audio card and the noi...

manki, did you read RichardAsh's post above yours?
If that doesn't help, here's a wiki page on Vista issues:

Re: new user help??
WC may be right. But you didn't mention how fast it was playing back. Is it just a very short (1/10th second) sound, or is it playing back twice as fast (e.g. "alvin and the the chipmunks" sound)? If it's very short, then WC is right. If the clip is playing like the Chipmunks, then you've got a samp...

Re: Conflict??
There's nothing wrong here, this quote proves it: winLAME uses a self-made API to LAME (which eases access for winLAME) that is packaged into a DLL called nLAME.dll The winLAME people compile their own version of the LAME encoder whenever they desire. It has nothing to do with Audacity's use of lame...

Re: Pre Record Audio Metering
Ok, I still agree that the meters should be always active. I should also add that they should unambiguously tell you which input they're monitoring. I'm sorry that this post got a bit out of hand, but I'm an engineer. Theatrical Exaggeration is not as useful to me as objectivity. Others may, of cour...

Re: Failure to record
There's no need to apologize for the lack of technical lingo, as long as you describe things well enough we can figure it out. Try running a recording session. At the end press stop and, before exporting or saving , make sure you can listen back to everything. If it isn't all there at that point the...

Re: How do you create those fast forward stopping points?
These so-called "pause points" are just the beginning of each track on the CD. The CD standard (Redbook Audio) is split up into Tracks that can easily accessed by using the Fast Forward (>>) and Fast Rewind (<<) buttons. If they're MP3s or if they're going to be burned to a CD again, I recommend jus...

Re: cancelling random noise
Actually, you can undo past a saved point. But only until you close down that instance of Audacity. So make sure you're happy with your results before you close the program (after saving one last time, of course).
Also, I recommend using 1.3.3, the Noise Removal effect is quite a bit nicer.
