Re: HELP: after crash, how can I recover data?

It's tricky, and it might not work, but this wiki page has all the info we've got on this:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... shRecovery

Note that Crash Recovery in 1.3.3 is much much better than 1.2.6.

Re: reducing one instrument's volume

It's not possible to unmix a signal. That's like trying to cut open a cake and get your eggs back intact.

You can try EQing it, but I have a feeling the results will not be very good. By all means, though, have a go at it.

Re: Plugin to simulate effects of cochlear implant ?

It's absolutely possible. Including the Matlab code was a very good idea, too. As far as I can tell, the audio processing involved is very similar (if not identical to) a vocoder. There might even be a Nyquist Vocoder plugin that you can use right now. If that's not the case, then the big problem is...

Re: Need advise ...best microphone?

No problem, recording is one of my passions, so I enjoy teaching it when I can. There is one thing I forgot to mention. Make sure you can plug everything in before you head home (if you buy it all at once). I use 2 XLR mic cables to plug between the mic -> pre-amp and between the pre-amp -> soundcar...

Re: ripping vinyl

Waxcylinder, While you're right about the interior of a PC case being electrically noisy, the good news is that the noise inside of a PC case is of much higher frequency than the Audio spectrum. So noise is basically a non-issue. There are fantastic PCI cards and there are fantastic FireWire/USB car...

Re: new user help??

iTunes default format is AAC, which is not supported by Audacity. I think there is a way to get iTunes to convert your entire library to MP3 format, but I'm not sure how it works with DRM files. Waxcylinder's advice about using Audacity to re-record files will take forever, but it is a fool-proof wa...

It's possible you have bad RAM. Try shutting down and taking that new RAM stick out, then reboot and try again. Does it work now?

Re: MP3 sounds like its underwater on winamp and WMP

First question, what bit rate are you exporting to? At the very least it should be 128, and 192 is quite a bit nicer. Some of the artifacts from exporting to a low bit rate MP3 are described as "underwater", so that's my first guess. It's very odd that the tunes sound different when played on a CD t...

<<<I should also add that they should unambiguously tell you which input they're monitoring.>>> That doesn't happen by looking at the input selector in the middle of the menu banner? You lost me there. Well, that input selector only works for specific drivers. It's blank on my install at home using...

Re: cancelling random noise

It depends on what you're using it for. 1.3.3 seems to upgrade a lot of editing related things such as: Nicer markers, easier Cut/Paste, and better noise removal. But you and I seem to use Audacity mostly for multi-track recording. Most of the upgrades in 1.3.3 haven't helped me much with my recordi...
