Are you trying to record at a sample rate that your soundcard doesn't support?

Everyone should be able to record at 44.1KHz, is that what you're using?

It might be coming up at the wrong sample rate. If you're using Windows you can right click on the file and click Properties -> Summary -> Advanced and Windows will tell you what it thinks the sample rate is. In Audacity's Edit -> Preferences -> Audio I/O menu do you have "software playthrough" checked? That needs to be unchecked to record streaming audio.

In Audacity's Edit -> Preferences -> Audio I/O menu, make sure "play other tracks while recording new one" is checked.

Re-import the file you've exported into Audacity, does it sound (and look) ok there? Is it just me, or do all the people who have this problem use a USB turntable? This is something we should be looking into.

I wonder if the USB turntables are not very well designed soundcards.
