Re: Space between clips in the same track
Only Audacity Beta (1.3.3) allows multiple clips per track. 1.2.6 does not.

Re: Audacity and Vista don't mix
There's a wiki page on this topic:
http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... trol_Panel
It's basically up to your drivers, if you can't update them then you'll need new hardware. Vista's audio is in a terrible state.

Re: Recording vocal narrative over background music?
You definitely want method #1. You need the voice separated from the music so that it can be mixed properly. The easiest way to do this is to just adjust the gain of each track until they sound good playing together. This page has a picture of the track controls towards the bottom: http://www.guides...

Re: Multi-device recording
I don't think Audacity can do this at the moment. You're certainly right that it's possible, but I'm not sure how much of Audacity's code would need to change to get that option.

I have no idea. Line6 should be able to tell you. The website said it supported both WDM and ASIO drivers, but it doesn't say how to switch between them.

Re: Microphone, additional question
It's not a bad idea to replace that card. Does it have a Line In? If it doesn't, then you'll probably need to replace it with something that has a Line In.
If it does have a Line In, I would wait until you have your new mic setup before spending even more money.

Yes, it's called Gverb.
It's not easy to use, but the wiki does a good job of giving some starting settings:

Re: many many channels causes crash
In that case it's probably your hard drive access time. If you've got a slow drive (like a laptop drive), or your drive is fragmented (defragging can be very helpful) then Audacity is probably just taking forever to access all that data when you press play. Personally I have some projects with 25+ t...

Re: Joining files with batch processing
I don't think Audacity can do this in an automated fashion. I wouldn't be surprised if there were a freeware app out there that could though.

Re: Editing a Waveform
This is easy to do with drums, but very difficult with most other instruments. It really boils down to zooming way in, listening carefully, and cut/pasting the good bits to a new track (one new track for each cut/paste, you'll end up with many tracks). Once you've got a good section on a separate tr...
