Steve logged a bug for this back in August: https://bugzilla.audacityteam.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2195

And two days ago he developed a fix for this - which will be in the upcoming 2.4.0 (probably end-April)

I cannot QA test this as I have no multi-channel kit (apart from 2-channel stereo, that is)

You can set Windows so that it doesn't do that - it errs (defaults) in the safe side and applies updates when required for security.

And Mac does similar - so it's not a "Microsoft thing"

And you will be able to when Audacity 2.4.0 is released (probably at the end of April).

I have been QA testing the notarization fix - and it works fine.

The current scheduled date is 30Apr20

It is recommended not to process more than 500 files at a time.

Update: I have added that same tip to a couple of the other pages on Macros - but this won't show till the next release 2.4.0

Does anyone know why when I use the workaround, it only fixes the no audio issue with my Mac's built-in microphone and not my USB plug-in microphone?

I'm puzzled because for me the workaround works with my Macbook Pro's built-in mic and my external USB soundcard (Edirol UA-1EX)

It's called the Vertical Scale.

Glad the workaround works for you.

The next release of Audacity 2.4.0 hopefully enf March will fix this - I have been QA testing the alpha builds.

The problem is not actually an Audacity one - but one of Apple's making, erecting ever higher border fences around macOS
