You will probably never get there because RIAA Phono Preamplifiers typically have no adjustments, internal or otherwise. I have the only stand-alone phono preamplifier I've ever seen with a knob on the front. I think it was a publicity gimmick to get me to spend more money for essentially nothing. ...

You have probably almost certainly not opened an MP3 file - but insttead are trying to open a filetype that Audacity does not support (Apple AAC by any chance?).
