Re: can't hear CD on CD player ...

I suspect that you are creating a data CD with WAV files on it - which is why it will play on your PC. What you need to do is to create a Music CD, and for this you will need some CD burning software like Nero or RecordNow. See this page from the Wiki: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Ho...

Re: Compression and stereo image

Steve,

thanks for that link - an interesting set of results.

I suspect the AAC proprietary choice by Apple may be to do with DRM and an attempt to facilitate the locking down of stuff ....

Re: Suggestions for a new cassette deck? (Really.)

This site http://www.analogstereo.com/nakamichi/nakamichi_582_service_manual.htm has a downloadable manual for the Nak 582 (with some basic skills you may be able to fix it yourself) - and so does this site http://www.hifiengine.com/manuals/nakamichi/582.shtml . I read one posting on the Nak 582 whe...

Re: Recording what I hear

I don't use Vista - but from what I remember reading other postings under Vista control isover the sound is passed from Audacity to the Sound services under Vista and your soundcard & driver s/w - so that's probably why it doesn't show the mixer toolbar.

Re: Compression and stereo image

If lossless is too big (expect no better than 50% of the original file size), then top quality MP3 is a good option, 320 kbps CBR. For high bit rates like this, CBR is better than VBR. (VBR is better at lower bit rates). If Audacity MP3 export is working for you, just select the "Insane" ...

Re: Suggestions for a new cassette deck? (Really.)

Before transferring my tapes I had my Nakamichi (a BX2) fully serviced including work on the transport mechanism. It cost c. Uk £150 - not cheap, but much better I thought than buying a new deck for that price. The are many resources available on t'interweb for Nakamichis - and there are secondhand ...

Re: Combining files

1) Export both your projects as a WAV file (and make a safe backup copy of these WAV files) 2) Open Audacity and import the first WAV file using File > Import > Audio 3) Import the second WAV file 4) This will cretae two tracks both stating at time=0 - so select the second track and use the time shi...

Re: Compression and stereo image

Steve, it doesn't look like iTunes/iPod supports FLAC or Ogg - the formats available in my import dropdown are: AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, MP3 and WAV. Thanks for your thoughts on this - I may need to do some experiments with lossless formats and then "do the math" to see whether that clas...
