When you plug in a USB device like this, Audacity hands over complete control over the sound services to the USB device. You may find that your USB TT has a gain control on it somewhere - for example the ION iTTUSB has a little knurled knob undeneath at the back.

Why are you bothering to record a song from a CD? You would be much better off ripping the track from the CD with some good ripping software to produce a good WAV file (iTunes can do this for you and can be downloaded free from the Apple site - there's plenty of other ripping software available). you will need to re-rip those tracks as WAV files and then open them in Audacity.

BBC7 broadcast digitally compressed audio (they do this to fit more channels into the digital spectrum) and the file you have downloaded will also be compressed - if you the compress this further to MP3 you will increase the compression and it will sound worse - you will get digital artifacts
