The default bitrate setting in Audacity 1.3 is 32-bit floating - I would try resetting that to 16-bit 44.1kHz (CD Red book standard).

Go to Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O and click on the tick box that says "play other tracks while recording new one"

becky,
no idea why this doesn't work - a workaround that exploits a new 1.3 feature world be to fit the stop button - and then to recommence recording hit Shift+Record or Shift+R - doing this in 1.3 will restart recording in the original track rather than starting a new track.

Only if you've saved the Audacity project and kept it - or exported each track as a separate WAV file - otherwise no.

I don't remember how to change the settings in Windows, but one of the Windows helpers will be along. Koz In Windows Explorer: Tools > Folder Options > View and uncheck the box that says "Hide Extensions for known file types" and while you are there you may want to slect the radio button ...
