1.2 projects can be opened in 1.3 but not the other way around. And note that a 1.2 project that is opened in 1.3 and then Saved will become a 1.3 project and can no longer be opened in 1.2.

Select the audio in Audacity (CTRL+A will select the whole project) and use Effect > Amplify.
For more sophisticated varying of amplitude you can use the Envelope tool.

To avoid having to burn the CD you can just import the set of WAVs into iTunes and the use the iTunes function Advanced > Create AAC Version - this will create compressed AAC copies at the bitrate you have set - and then you can just delete the WAV versions from ...
