Re: Volume variation between adjoining tracks
You can use the Envelope tool to vary the volume level at different parts of the recording. The Envelope tool is the icon with two white triangles pointing to a little white dot with a blue line passing through. With this tool selected you can set the little white dots at various points and move the...

Re: Alphabetic Listings
Do you still have your paper telephone directory? Those are marvels of efficiency. Actually I agree Koz, I wasn't writing a justification - merely a commentary on the vicissitudes of the s/w (or maybe it's just lazy implementation) :D BTW: for years telephone directory listings, indexes in books et...

Re: Input devices grayed out (Vista)
You should be able to record from CD's - either play it on the PC and use the "Stereo Mix" input option - or play it on an external CD deck (plus you may need a preamp to boost the signal) and use the "Line in" input. But better (and easier) will be to rip the CD to a set of WAV ...

Re: Best CD Burner?
iTunes will do the job too - also avaible free to download. But it's a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a walnut, if all you're using it for is a ripper and not using the library/jukebox functionality too.

Re: Help regarding selecting audio.
Just un-click the "Snap To" that you will find down near the bottom left of the Audacity window.
BTW it also looks as though you have the additional problem of clipping (an oversaturated signal) - the waveforms should not be touching the top/bottom - the 1.0 level in waveform view.

Re: Alphabetic Listings
I suspect that this may not be an option as I'm pretty sure that this will be a "feature" of the s/w that is used to drive the forum.
You can use the box that says "Display pages starting at" to jump around in the contents list - does that help at all?

Re: Use of Audacity as a multi-track recorder
I'm checking out 1.3 now. The giveaway is where it says "for advanced users" silly me. I'll give it a try. Hopefully it'll resolve this issue I'm having. Don't be scared off by the "advanced users" or the "unstable" descriptions. 1.3.7 is now pretty mature an em...

Re: hiss
Lenny, you should be able to use Audacity's Noise Removal function provided that you can get a decent sample of the hiss with no other signal. Otherwise you might want to try Brian Davies' DeNoise software. It does cost a little, but seems to work well. I have no 78's any more but I tried it out on ...

Re: Input selector greyed out! (Win XP)
I recorded sound from a couple of DVDs in my collection by playing my DVD deck through to my PC via my external soundcard (Edrol UA-1EX) and this worked a treat. In this situation, as teve alledes to, the PC is not handling the playing of the DVD, just recording the incoming digital bitstream. Shoul...
