Re: Saving preferences
Bob, your Preferences certainly should be saved for you - that is the entire point of preference setting. In 1.2.x on Windows the Preferences are store in the Windows Registry (ugh!) In 1.3.x the developers have moved the saved preferences to an audacity.cfg file (one is created per user - so indivi...

@vinniel - I moved this topic to where I believe you originally intended to post iy - I have left a "shadow" copy in the 1.3 subsection where it was actually posted. Clicking onthe shadow posting will direct users to this posting in the 1.2 subsection.

Re: Best Location to record events
The camcorder is likely to give you the worse sound - the additional device will be better (but nowhere near the quality that goes through the mixing board). I used to make occasional gig recordings with a Sony top-end portable minidisc recorder and a good mic - the results were never really any goo...

Re: 1.3.8 Still Making Muddy MP3's
You could try finding a standalone LAME MP3 converter to compress WAVs that you export from Audacity. One key advantage is that you are likely to get more control over the various configurable settings for MP3 compression with the standalone rather than the limited control you get with the plug-in i...

Re: effect menu
You need to have some audio "selected" for the effect to work on. Click and drag with your cursor to select a section or CTRL+A to select the whole project.
Oh, and you must have Stopped playing or recording - Pause is not sufficient.

Re: tone adjustment
In my installation of 1.3.8 I don't see an effect called Tone Adjuster
I still have the Equalization effect which still has the set set of pre-set equalization curves.
So I'm puzzled by your post.

Re: WAV files won't play—anywhere!
What setting are you exporting the WAVs with - I would recommend 16-bit PCM stereo 44.1kHz.
This is the Red Book CD standard and is generally reckoned to be the most portable amongst players and software applications.

Re: Best Location to record events
Best location is straight off the mixing desk - but thet're unlikely to give you access to that :) Seriously though, with the inbuilt mic in a camcorder you are unlikely to get any sort of quality sound wherever you stand in the venue - and in many locations you can risk seriously overloading the mi...

Re: 1.3.8 Still Making Muddy MP3's
So it's sounding like you can hear the effects of the MP3 compression at 128 and only slightly at 192 - so there may be nothing you can do about this 128 is generally reckoned to be the minimum setting level for recorded music (it's what iTunes Store used to use before they switched to selling 256 b...
