IIRC this sometimes happens when you don't have the correct number of channels assigned in your Audacity preferences to match the channel on your soundcard.

This is a known bug in 1.2.x - it has been fixed in the beta 1.3.x (it will not be fixed in 1.2). IIRC it's down to the use of lc z as one of the keyboard shortcuts. Odd that though. I run an Edirol UA-1EX soundcard which I always leave connected to my desktop - and this runs fine with no problems (he says, hastily touching wood) when preconnected on boot-up and fire-up of Audacity.
