It's extremely unlikely to be fast enough on a external disk to deal with the demands of real-time audio capture. Can you free up some working space on you on-board disk? In 1.3 on the Export dialog box there should be a button marked "Options" - click this and you should be able to set the various MP3 options

Yes but I only get about 65% success rate in getting my CDs that are made from vinyl transcriptions recognized by CDDB - but I regard that as reasonable.
