Adjusting the gain would seem to band-aid the issue for the time being. No, not a band-aid - it's the right way to do things. IMHO it is better to adjust the signal level on a good pre-amp prior to presenting the signal to Audacity. I am disappointed there is no option to export tracks in .mp3 form...

Those are very big projects for Audacity to work with (unless the songs are very short) - just take care when working with such large projects. Personally I don't like to work with anything much over two hours in a single project.

Which computer and which operating system - and which version of Audacity? Did you connect the USB before starting Audacity (you should).
