Frank, boy oh boy you sure are getting a lot of clipping - I don't think I've ever seen an Audacity waveform display that shows so much red ! Ok - something else we can try ... Does your PC have a line-in socket (it will be a little 3.5mm stereo jack socket (normally coloured blue) - NOT a Microphon...

No they shouldn't at all.

BYW it is only in 1.2 Audacity that you get the choice - in 1.3 Audacity there is only ID3v2

Falty connector or wire most likely, that has somehow corrected itself - sometimes slight movement or change in atmospheric humidity can have an effect.

Not in 1.2 it doesn't - are you using Audavity 1.3 on your Linux mac (it probably came that way with the distro) ?
