Have you set your Audacity to record in stereo 2-channel - by default 1.2.x is set to mono.

Just go to Edit > Preferences and select the Audio I/O tab. In the box markked Recording you will see where you can set Channels.

Use Shift+A - this will stop the playback and leave the cursor at the current playback position.
