You have to be in Stop mode and not just Pause mode for the effects to work.

You can apply negative amplification with the amplify effect - experimentation is what you need to do.goldtiger wrote:how would I turn it down a bit to get it exactlly how I want it?

No - it is your vsoundcard that is applying the DC offset - you need to fix that Probably by replacing the soundcard or using an external USB soundcard). Or put up with the workaround as Audacity does no processing in realtime while recording (though this is an oft requested feature request).

or you could generate a 7-second silence and place it in your paste buffer by using CTRL+C or Edit>Copy
Then just move your cursor to each required position and press CTRL+V to paste the silence at each location.

You have what is know as DC-offset - normally a fault with your soundcard - and yours looks a fairly extreme case.
You can correct for it after recording by using the Normalize effect. Do the DC-offset correction immediately after capture - but =do not at that stage apply any normalization.
