1) select the silence (using click&drag)
2) Ctrl + K to delete it
3) Select a small amount of audio either side of the deletion
4) Effect > Crossfade Clips
You might want to drop a temporary label after the deletion to aid the step 3 selection - use Ctrl + B

I assume that on Mac you will have downloaded and installed using the DMG, right? In which case you will already have the Manual installed with Audacity. You can access it from the app by using Help > Manual If you need to access it directly if you right click on Audacity in Finder and choose Show P...
