I normally amplify to a ceiling of -3.0 dB which is normally plenty loud enough while leaving a little headroom (as some players don't like audio files that go to the max. 0 dB apparently). That's what the "Time Shift" tool is for - the little button with a short horizontal arrow with a head at each end
