You can try using the Effect > Truncate Silence to remove/shorten the silences/gaps You will need to play with the parameters - you'll probably want to reduce the Min duration, increase the Max duration and increase the Silence Compression ratio. A quick expeiment on your 12 second MP3 sample reduce...

Is this a feature request? Is it a bug? Or is it intended bahaviour - a "feature"? If it's a "feature" is it documented properly in the manual? WC P.S. while testing this I found that generating a loud high frequency "chirp" is a great way to clear the cats from my room...

I propose to move this to the Audio Processing section as solanus has provided a method to do this with existing Audacity.

@Koz: do you still want me to add this to the Wiki>Pending Feature Requests page - or is solanus' solution good enough for you?
