Many laptops do not have a line-in only mic-in. A very few have a "magic" mic-in that can sense the signal level and adappt itself to line-level (which is around a 1,000 time greater signal). If yours is not one of those then you are probably a candidate for one of the external soundcards ...

Ok - so are all the leads plugged in properly with clean connectors and pushed (gently) securely home in their sockets?
And you're not using a USB hub, right?
Another thought: Have you tried a different USB input on your laptop?

You are using Effect > Amplify to bring the sound level up as the last step prior to exporting right? I amplify to -3 dB for WAV files for my iTunes, which I convert in iTunes to AAC for my iPod, which I find plenty loud enough - my son however complains that the recordings are sometimes too loud on...

Nor am I the right person to ask - I'm a Windows ellf ;) You do realize that questions of this nature are likely to bring out the zealots on both sides and even the hair-shirt Linux brigade may weigh in ... :) But seriously though, before I would even conside new hardware I would be trying to borrow...
