1) if hi-fi quality audio is not required try making a compressed MP3 bersion of the project.

your mono track is just a little squashed - make it bigger by grabbing the bottom edge an dragging down

Go to Edit > Preferences> Recording and uncheck the box next to "Sound Activated Recording"
