If you're using iTunes then why aren't you using Apple's AAC compression format rather than MP3? It is generally reckoned to give better quality versus MP3 bitrate-for-bitrate and size-for-size. Is this a USB turntable by any chance?? If so then try unplugging it from your PC before playing the music in Real Player or Media Player.
