If you're using iTunes then why aren't you using Apple's AAC compression format rather than MP3? It is generally reckoned to give better quality versus MP3 bitrate-for-bitrate and size-for-size. Another thought: have you checked the iTunes store and other online music sites) to see if the album is commercially available as a download.

That's how I got a copy of our family's old Perry Como Christmas record a couple of years ago 8-)

When this noise is between tracks it can be completely removed with a noise gate ... http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Nyquist_Effect_Plug-ins#Noise_Gate What I do is to use use Ctrl-L in Audacity to convert the intertrackgap to proper silence and usually I add a very short fade-in to the beginning...

Is this a USB turntable by any chance?? If so then try unplugging it from your PC before playing the music in Real Player or Media Player.
