This implies that your setup is like most USB devices; when such a device is plugged in control over the sound services (including the volume) is handed over to the soundcard/drivers/Windows. BTW those little red vertical lines in your screenshot above are the clipping indicators. They show that the recording is already reaching or exceeding the maximum 0 dB.
