Re: Mono track to Stereo
The manual's glossary defines it thus: An offsetting of a signal from zero. A signal with DC Offset would appear in the Audacity Default Waveform view to be not centered on the 0.0 horizontal line. DC Offset results in reduced headroom and can cause clicks at the start and end or distortion after r...

Re: Mono track to Stereo
I also have the same "habit" as Steve. But it lends itself to some useful behaviour: 1) I use Normalize purely as a DC-offset tool with it's amplification box left unchecked. 2) Then can use Amplify as my amplitude adjustment tool (For a start I prefer to see how much amplification or need...

Re: Determining recording method from file (or logs)
I am a Windows XP user and I use Windows Direct Sound on both my PCs (one is an old, low memory, desktop with XP-HE, t'other is a newish lapup with XP-PRO) and I used Windows Direct Sound quite happily on both those machines. I chose WDS over MME as it is a more moderm implementation of an API. My w...

Re: Adding parameter to Cleanspeech
... Do I really need to use Chris's Dynamic Compressor? I dont mind turning up the volume for a track... but I just wanted to get rid of the sudden surge in volume that made my ears hurt! Personally I wouldn't (I never use compression myself) I pefer to retain the original dymanicr ange that the ar...

Re: Adding parameter to Cleanspeech
It's because you are in Cleanspeech mode - several of the effects are non-available in that mode, including Amplify (I just tested) You need to be careful with Cleanspeach anyway. From 1.3.14 it has become "unavailable" (it caused problems ...) - if you turned it on in an earlier version o...

Re: Can I improve on what I already do?
I routinely remove sub-sonic frequencies from my LP captures. I have a peak at about 8 Hz (turntable rumble), so I apply a 15 Hz 24 dB/octave HPF, or use Brain Davies' DeNoiseLF. The level of the sub-sonic stuff is not too bad, but I see no reason not to remove it. Interesting Bill... One thing I n...

Re: Can I improve on what I already do?
... as Koz pointed out, in extreme cases it can destroy the speakers. In less extreme cases it causes the speakers to operate outside of their ideal range and although the sub frequencies themselves are not audible it can have a detrimental effect on bass frequencies within the audible range making...
