I can play through while recording and hear it fine on the speakers ... but not without the recording function running. You can "monitor" before and without recording by clicking in the Recording meter - see this page in the manual: http://manual.audacityteam.org/help/manual/man/meter_too...

One model that would be worth looking into is the font menu in Open Office. The most recently used fonts are replicated at the top of the menu for quick recall. Audacity does have "repeat <previous effect>" at the top of the list, but if that opened a list of, say, the last 5 effects used...
