Personally I use iTunes (downloadable for free - and you don't need to have an iPod).

But Steve hates iTunes - he regards it as resource-hungry bloat-ware :)

However I find it works well on both my PCs: old DEll desktop with XP-HE and new Tosh laptop with W7 64-bit

Are you sure you're pressing the Stop button and not the Pause - that sounds like Pause button behaviour.

Yes but you will still get the RIAA equalization applied incorrectly by your preamp if you play the record at a lower speed. You could plug a pair of headphones into the headphone socket without puttind them on your head (but you may still hear those, albeit quieter) - or better still try a simple jack plug with no wires connected plugged in the headphone socket.
