In which case you can split the stereo track - 1) Click in the track name in the Track control panel and select Split Stereo Track 2) operate on either track independently 3) rejoin the tracks by clicking in the trackname in the TCP of the top track of the two and select Make Stereo Track Hey presto...

My preferred version is version 30 +1 for #30 It's relatively straightforward and understandable - and it's quite powerful without being dauntingly complex, so should encourage users to experiment. You could alway click on the split line (yes this will remove it) bt then click Ctrl+B to place a temporary label at that point.
