My issue with this is that you are overlooking the fact that Audacity Click Removal is not best-in-class - and would benefit from improvement/re-write.

A program like Total Recorder should be good for recording "analog" signals ... would I need such a program to record internet audio in Audacity? If so how would I tell Audacity that "Total Recorder" is the source, because at the moment Audacity does not detect any internet audi...

Step 6 in that workflow recommends taking a raw master backup, by exporting a 32-bt WAV, immediately after recording and before any processing - that way you can always go right back to the beginning if and when digital audio processing improves (or your skills improve...).
