Start off with a read of this tutorial from the manual: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tu ... puter.html
If you still can't get it to work (and if so please post back) there is a more advanced method in the latest 2.0.4 Audacity that may help.

A feature request has been made for Append Import - a way to mark the joins between the imported files. What was supposed to happen is for you to connect the USB cable to your computer and nothing else. The music on the USB cable (in a working turntable) is fully corrected and should sound as good as those turntables ever did. As Koz says - and make sure that the RCA plugs are not touching each other...

And you may find the Studio Fade Out gives you a more "musical" fade:
